How to Prepare for Your Interview

A simple guide to help you feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready.

Whether you’re sharing your story, providing a client testimonial, talking about your business, or explaining your product or service, the goal of the interview is to capture natural, authentic answers. Below is everything you need to know to prepare.

1. Where to Look

We conduct interviews slightly off-camera, meaning you’ll be looking at a person (or a laptop, if we’re filming via Zoom), not directly into the lens.

  • Keep your eye contact on the person interviewing you.

  • Try to avoid glancing toward the camera - it can be distracting on screen.

2. Answering in Full Sentences

To help the editing process and ensure your message sounds polished, it’s important to answer in full sentences and finish each thought clearly.

Common mistake:

“We’ve had the business for close to 5 years now and it’s been amazing to watch it grow from our garage to our warehouse... and… yeah!”

This kind of trailing off makes it difficult to create a clean edit.

What we’re looking for:

“We’ve had the business for close to 5 years now, and it’s been amazing to watch it grow from our garage to our warehouse.”

Ending your sentence cleanly not only helps us in the edit but also makes you sound more confident and professional.

3. We’ll Guide You on the Day

Our team will lead the conversation and may ask you certain questions more than once to capture the best possible take.
This is completely normal - think of the interview as a relaxed conversation, not a test.

4. Review Your Questions in Advance (But Don’t Script Your Answers)

We’ll send through your interview questions ahead of time. Feel free to jot down key points or ideas so you feel prepared.

However:

  • Don’t memorise or script your responses.

  • Over-preparing can make you sound rehearsed and stiff.

  • The best answers are natural, conversational, and comfortably delivered.

Use your notes as a guide, not a script.

5. Mistakes Are Totally Normal

Everyone fumbles their words - even people who speak on camera for a living.

If you trip up, laugh, or want to re-do an answer, that’s completely fine.
We film with two cameras, which gives us flexibility to cut around mistakes and keep the final video engaging and seamless.

6. Add Context to Your Answers

If you're being interviewed about a product, service, person, or business, try to name-drop when relevant. This makes your answer understandable even if it’s used as a standalone clip.

Example:

Question: “What has been your favourite thing about the new product?”
Weak answer: “It has really great features and it’s super portable.”
Strong answer: “The [insert product name] has really great features and it’s super portable.”

This ensures your response makes sense out of context and is more useful across different marketing channels.

7. Feeling Nervous? Totally Normal.

Most people feel a little nervous speaking on camera. Our job is to guide you through the experience and help you feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible.
You don’t need to be perfect - you just need to be yourself.

Additional Tips

8. What to Wear

  • Choose solid colours and avoid busy patterns or stripes.

  • Avoid large logos (unless it’s intentional branding).

  • Keep jewellery minimal to avoid noise or glare.

  • Wear something you feel comfortable and yourself in - confidence shows on camera.

9. Your Voice & Delivery

  • Take your time - there’s no rush.

  • Pause for a moment between thoughts (this helps with editing).

  • Speak as if you’re talking to one person, not an audience.

10. Timing & On-the-Day Prep

  • Please arrive a little early so we can settle you in and get started calmly.

  • Bring water and anything you may need (notes, product samples, etc.).
